The Lodge

Chi Psi at UC Berkeley boasts a beautiful home designed by renowned architect Julia Morgan. The Delta Delta Lodge has stood for generations at the intersection of Piedmont Ave. and Durant Ave.

Unique to Chi Psi, the undergraduate brothers don't live in "a house"...we live in "the Lodge". The reason for this lies in our history. The Brothers of Alpha Epsilon at the University of Michigan built the first fraternity house in America in 1845. Because the university administration was opposed to secret societies, the Brothers had to conceal themselves and their new home. To do this, they constructed a log cabin in the woods surrounding the campus. That log cabin resembled a hunting lodge, and so thereafter every Chi Psi home was referred to as a “Lodge.”

Amenities at the Berkeley Lodge include a full sand volleyball court, a parking garage, a basketball court, pool and foosball tables, a full-service kitchen, a library, and a washer and dryer. Our meal plan includes ten meals per week. The majority of our Brothers choose to live in the Lodge after their first year at Cal and until they graduate.

Below is a link to the original 1922 article written in the fraternity’s magazine, The Purple and Gold, about the new Delta Delta Lodge.
